It would be unfair to block PR if a party does not want it: Jamaat
Responding to a question from journalists whether the proportional representation (PR) system could be stuck in the upper house of the bicameral parliament if a major party does not want it, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Amir Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher said, “We think that it would be injustice and discrimination if one or three parties do not want it. Because the majority of parties are in favor of the proportional representation system.” Abdullah Mohammad Taher told reporters after participating in the 14th day of the second phase of the discussions of political parties with the National Consensus Commission at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Tuesday. Abdullah Mohammad Taher said that most parties are supporting the proportional representation system. He said, “NCP, Islamic Movement, People’s Rights Council, we, Jamaat-e-Islami, are in favor of PR.” The party’s Naib-e-Ameer also said that Jamaat-e-Islami’s position is in favor of introducing the PR system in all areas, including the upper house, lower house, and reserved women’s seats.
